? Do you commence with a story?
? Do you begin with a reflection on the focus of your forthcoming graduate studies?
? Do you start at the beginning? And where exactly is that?
If you want your graduate essayto grab the attention of the graduate admission representative, then keep reading this article…
The graduate admissions committee is looking for a snapshot of you –
? Where you've been,
? Where you want to go, and
? what you want to do with the degree
Here are three simple tips to start your graduate essays:
1. You should start with a concise academic history of about a paragraph in length.
2. Then use up a paragraph talking about the research that you’ve done (or doing at the time).
3. Then talk about why you wished to go to that school and your career goals and how that particular graduate program would help you meet those.
The statement/essay is also where you would tackle any probable problems, such as an undergrad GPA below 3.0 or a misdemeanor conviction, etc. If you don't have those problems, great. If so, address them.
That is about it really. Your graduate school essay should really just be a summary of your total application...except... you do want to stress how the graduate program fits into your career plans particularly. You will also want to draw attention to the types of research you want to do (or the type of project you want to do for your dissertation/thesis).
When I was helping one of my friends writing graduate admissions essay this year, I divided the graduate essay into 3 parts:
Past, Present, and Future.
In our graduate school, we ask that it be a personal statement, not a story. Basically we ask them to address the following in their statement:
? Why a master's degree?
? Why graduate school now?
? What about your background has led you to this?
You can still grab the attention of the reader by following these concepts. Try to talk conversationally, the way you wrote your question above. A little humor is OK, and you can certainly add in your accomplishments (although I assume they asked for a resume, and that will highlight those...)

I'm writing a dark Inuyasha fanfic, it has a few OC's in it, I know, mary sues and all. It's a gift to a friend who no longer writes, but I love torturing her little character. Well, I would love to have some feedback, it's not a story for the faint of heart or the squeamish, I would really like a new beta to help me with keeping the structure clean and double checking my spelling errors.

Kind of tired of seeing bad japanese here folks so here you go.
(NOTE: Im using Veggie Trunks's list as a base but i am adding and making corrections to some innacuracies.
(Note. a * next to the O- prefix means that the O was only used to refer to the object if it was japanese in origin, like japanese beer or japanese food.)
(Note. a ^ next to the o- prefix means it is only used as an honnorific for someone elses family member. So I'm looking for a beta reader for a Gundam Wing fic I am writing. I'm trying to keep it dark, depressing and all sorts of good things ^_^
I'm already about 7000 words into it, but I'm not in a huge rush to post it yet. I'm just looking to get it posted once it is all polished and sparkly. The theme is post apocalyptic, and has a few nods to a few things in the genre, like A Boy and His Dog, Fallout, Dr. Strangelove.
I'm not too worried about spelling/grammar errors, since I've never really had a problem with them. I'm looking for someone who can help me with consistency of atmosphere and a general feel for what is good/bad in the story. Knowledge of Gundam Wing isn't really required, as it splits off into a different direction at the start of the series (but keeps the history the same).
So if you're interested, please send me a private message. I'd be very grateful.

Can't decide on my crappy oneshot ending. It goes something like this.
*IY awakes from tree
*Jewel comes out of Kagome
*Thinks its Kikyo, confesses his love, angered at her betrayal
*Turns full demon, tortures her, Youkai wants him to stop
*Kagome dies
*500 years later stumbles upon Kagome's funeral
Ending
*He's either really remorseful
*Bangs her mom, done having sex, who are you moments...the man that murdered your daughter
I think both would be good but which is better?
PS, it is angst

Ive gotten tired of seeing these people who complain saying they have a great plot idea, but someone has done something similar already, so they are afraid of being called plagiarist(Sp?)
Here's my advice. Don't be afraid of that, if anything it should be a driving force in your fiction. How many Gakuen (School Life) manga's are there? Hundreds, they all contain basically the same scenarios, but also they are still among the most popular of genres.
Another example. Star Wars dazzled the world not because it was something new, but because it was a very old story, right down to the knight and princess. Audiences responded because it was presented in a fresh way.
So by all means, if you think you can build a better mousetrap, go right ahead.
(Wrong thread, sorry, would a mod move this?? My apologies)

It's important in writing to practice proper grammar, puncuation, word usage, and format. Try posting longer responses with capitalized sentence intiation, and proper spelling (there's a damn spell check, so there's no excuse).
Also:
Sign up for the Word of the Day email at Dictionary.com, it's free and totally safe. There's no junkmailing, just the occasional optional servey. And you learn quite a lot! Try it out, it's worked wonders for my blabbing and writing alike.

Here are some exercises I use for writing. Try them out for yourself if you find them useful. Also, if there are any tips you can share, do so - it's always a joy to try new things.
-------------------------------------------------- ---------------
1: Try to summarize you story in twenty-five words or less - if you can't, you probably don't have a good grasp of what you're doing.
2: Choose a title - it may not be the title you'll use when finished your story, but a title (or label) on your story gives you a good idea of what you're trying to do.
3: When you're finished writing, put the finished product aside for a day, or even up to a week. This way, you can return to it with an objective viewpoint. The longer the story, the longer you should place it out of your mind before returning to it. You don't want to release anything you're still personally attatched to, otherwise if someone comments on it, you may take it personally - you need to be objective when releasing your works, or you may regret it!
4: Edit, edit, edit, and then try and get someone else to edit for you. And only edit after placing your story out of the way for awhile. If it's fresh, then you understand every word. But when it cools down, you'll get a better view for sorting out what works (and what doesn't, naturally).
5: Less is more. Your story needs the appropiate amount of words - not too many so it's redunant (but on the other side of the scale, not too few so it's confusing). One exercise to try, is consider each word worth a quartre, and then work on getting your story to a good amount that you're willing to buy it for.

I know that it's the first of a tetralogy of movies remaking the series, but I would like to know if anyone has seen it yet and if they could tell me how it compares to the original series. I've only seen a few episodes of the original, and while I want to see more, I can't afford to spend $40-$50 on the box set just to see if I can get into it.

Since it is officially the X-Mas season I became interested in what everyone else thought an anime character would give to another character from a completely seperate anime (or the same)
Maybe Gohan would give Hiei the Z-sword (before it broke) or maybe Kuwabara would give Rock Lee one of his swell "for love" headbands.

| Quote: | SoltyRei (ソルティレイ, SoltyRei?) is a Japanese anime series by GONZO and AIC combining attributes of drama and sci-fi, about the inhabitants of a city where an Aurora prevents aerial travel.
On 2006-04-02 FUNimation Entertainment confirmed at Anime Expo that it had the rights to distribute Solty Rei[1]. Prior to this a fansubbing group had reported receiving a cease and desist letter from FUNimation Entertainment with the English name of the anime given as Origin[2], although the name seems to have been confused with Origin: Spirits of the Past.

I'm quite glad that I have Comcast On Demand sometimes; this series happened to be in the Anime Network section, and four episodes were ready to be watched. The series opened up with some nice visuals, and of course, the voice actor of Piccolo (And Vegeta), Christopher Sabat.
The series is quite good, and revolves around an incident that took place 12 years ago, called the Blast Fall. The show revolves around main character Roy Revant (Christopher Sabat), a bounty hunter who lost his daughter in the Blast Fall with an attitude like Piccolo's; Solty, a strange green-haired gynoid with no memory of her past; Miranda Maverick, Roy's sister in-law who lost her husband to the Blast Fall; and her daughter, Kasha Maverick (Luci Christian, who voiced in Gravion as Luna Gusuku, Elfen Lied as Mariko/Hiromi Kurama, and Full Metal Alchemist as Wrath/Clara/Psiren).
I recommend the series to anyone who likes a bit of action, drama, and a bit of futuristic sci-fi Anime.
EDIT: These are the Promos for the Anime.

Also, if anyone can find Episode 25 for me, that'd be great; I've seen the entire series and heard there's an Episode 25&26 that wraps up all the loose ends, but I have yet to find anything about it on the web, aside from just ... statements of its existence.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
As many of you know, I help run an anime review website. Recently, however, the site proprietor and myself have been sidetracked by other projects and RL responsibilities, and are unable to keep up with regular updates. While we don't intend to abandon the site, we realize that the frequency of the updates will certainly decrease if we don't get some help. Therefore, M.H. Torringjan's and Black Seventeen's Anime Reviews is looking for contributors to provide reviews on a regular basis.
If you are interested, please PM me or visit our site at http://geocities.com/mhtorringjan/reviews/reviewsm ain and email either M.H. or myself at the addresses listed for further details. Please bear in mind, we are looking for regular contributors, not those who only contribute one or two reviews and then bail out (a problem we have repeatedly run into in the past).
Thank you, and we hope to hear from some of you soon.

Hey all,
I just need a couple of questions answered, if anyone knows offhand - I'm trying to avoid going back through the whole series of Sailor Moon, you see ...
1/ Does the CURRENT Pluto (as opposed to the 30th Century version)ever actually indicate she knows much if anything about Crystal Tokyo?
2/ I'm planning a fanfic where the Senshi, after Usagi breaks up with Mamoru, take a vacation to Hawaii, where Setsuna just HAPPENS to own a large beach house. So, what activities do you think the various girls would like to indulge in whilst there (apart from what Haruka and Michiru indulge in every night! ) ? I mean, Haruka and beach buggy racing is a given, but what about the rest?

Alright, it's the next novella, following the events of "Continuing on My Own". We know from the end of the last book that Souske's mighty pissed, but without Mithril or the Alabrest, how the hell is he going to get Kaname back from Amalgam? If you have speculations, share them.

Hello everyone!
I'd just like to start a thread about this quite wierd and mostly unappreciated anime. Is there any one who knows/likes it?
Honestly, first I wasn't convinced myself to watched these series. What scared me at most was probably that wierd opening clip with some dancing houses and bright, neon-bright coloures... I wouldn't probably bother to give it a second look if I didn't know that there is some yaoi going out there (and I as you can guess am a fan of it ^_~) So I took a look at the second half of the series and here I am, totally in love.
In fact I'm not so much into anime and manga (I used to be when I was younger - I watched everything I could get) I like older series - new ones rather annoy me with their rather repeatable formulas (just my opinion)
I'm much more into Japanese culture and language, because that's what I'm studying currently, but Tenshi ni Narumon really has captured my heart. It has this unusual mix of fluffy cheerfulness and dark, almost creepy undertones and so many other things that made me watching this series over and over again, even if for some time I give it a rest and turn to something else...
It's really a shame that so few among anime fans know that such a series even exist... I hope to changed it (well, just hope ^_~)
So what do you think? I hope to see your opinions on plot, characters, music etc

*Camera zooms in on a familiar-looking Saiyan clad in combat armor, a red-lensed Scouter, and a tail wrapped about his waist sitting at a table, a steaming cup of coffee and small stack of papers in front of him. Beside the Saiyan is a pink-haired girl working furiously to replace the points of a distributor cap.*
SAIYAN: Greetings, viewers, and welcome to the first installment of "Shotgun Review". I'm your host, Kakaroto, and over here is my lovely co-host, Haruhara Haruko.
*Haruko looks up from the distributor and smiles at the camera.*
KAKAROTO: Haruko and I have spent the last several days watching the popular Anime series Blue Gender. Let's do this by the numbers so as to simplfy the matter, shall we?
HARUKO: As you wish. *picks up the stack of papers and begins reading the review composed of both their opinions*
ANIMATION: 8.5/10. The way this series was drawn really made the characters seem alive and vibrant, yet made the Blue and the decimated Earth seem bleak and desolate.
PLOT: 10/10. Once someone starts watching this show, it's nearly impossible to stop. Some argue that it's merely an Anime version of Starship Troopers. (I tend to agree, seeing as how that was one of the best movies of the 90's.) There are few plot twists, but they're exciting enough to only add to the show, not detract from it. And the subplots (Yuji and Marlene's romance, the fights between Marlene and Alicia over Yuji and the rivalry between Yuji and Tony) further ehnace the series.
ENDING: 5.3/10 Sorry, folks, but this was the only low point of the series. It wasn't very self-explanatory (it took me nearly four hours and repeated viewings to finally get it), and it was sort of a cliffhanger. Not actually hearing the words "I love you" from either Yuji or Marlene was kind of a downer, as well.
OVERALL: 9.3/10. Except for the last two or three episodes, this series was the bomb. The only series that has been more enjoyable for us is Trigun (which we may review in the next episode.) it had action, drama, romance, angst, and, of course, plenty of violence, blood, and butt-ugly villians.
KAKAROTO: I think that sums it up pretty well. Kudos to FUNimation. (This more than makes up for DragonBall GT.) If more series were like this, then people wouldn't make the assumption that Hamtaro and Pokemon are typical of all Japanese animation. Until next time, this is Kakaroto...
HARUKO: ...and the oh-so-kawaii Haruhara Haruko...
BOTH: ...signing off.
*Scene fades to black.*

Heh. Put this in the wrong forum originally..
Has anyone seen the new ROD TV series? I just saw the first three and liked it a lot, though it's not quite the same as Read or Die the OVAs.

What ever happened to our manga thread? I could've sworn that we had one.
Oh well, this thread is about the Erica Sakurazawa books. They've just started to be realeased through Tokyopop, starting with Angel.
I like that the angel only drinks Gin with lime. Also really loved Chi, the little girl.
What really sticks with me is that, despite the fact that she approaches several mature themes, like suicide and child neglect, the book maintains an innocent feel throughout. It's really sweet.

The following thread is a lengthy review of the Tokyopop Rising Stars of Manga volume 1. The reason for its length is because this is not just one manga to review, but ten in fact… I decided against a grading scale or system of any kind because 1: these are amateur manga/comics, and 2: each manga is so different from the next; it would be rather unfair to directly compare the personal styles with one another. Nevertheless, please take the time to read through it (whether its all at once or just as you come and go about the forum); and look for more manga reviews in the months to come...
The Rising Stars of Manga contest from Tokyopop was made to give aspiring comic artists and storytellers of today a public change to prove him or herself worthy of entering the enormous industry. The ten winners chosen months ago to be published, no have the first portion of there personalized American Manga out and on display in the first volume of The Rising Stars of Manga.
Only sectioned off, as a grand-prize winner and nine runner(s) up, this compilation is a large exhibition of very, very talented individuals whom all have risen to the challenge of wanting and striving to become a successful manga/comic artist. Those chosen by Tokyopop were judged ever so critically on categories such as, general content (did the story make sense), specific content (was there a visible theme), storyboarding (were the script and the artwork dually consistent), dialogue (was it constructive), composition (was it visually organized), originality (was a bit of personal taste thrown in), believability (does it look like much time was spent on it), artwork (is it pleasing to the eye), and many others as well.
The grand-prize winner was Devil*s Candy, from Pricilla Hamby and Clint Bickham; a manga about the adventures of high-school students that live in your not-so-average town of gothic contentment. With regular characters appearing as vampires, mutants and skeleton ninjas (the gym teacher), Devil*s Candy is a well-done action/comedy with somewhat of a cuteness given to its characters. If you see the first volume of the Rising Stars of Manga in stores, front and center on both covers is the picture of a female nurse… one of the characters of the Hamby and Bickham mini-epic; her role is surprisingly humorous and flows really well within the plot. To find out more though you will have to read the bit yourself. Devil*s Candy is very well drawn with very original characters as well as with a very original plot; the only potential problem I see is the story continuity, it does not flow perhaps as well as it should. But then again, there just may be future volumes that will enlighten us further and deeper into the story.
After Devil*s Candy come the runner-up manga, many crafted just as amazingly as the top winner if not more so.
Next (in the order as you read through volume 1), is Van Von Hunter, from Michael Schwerk and Ron Kaulfersh; another comedy that centers on an air-headed swordsman whom the title is named after and his two adventuring companions (a meek yet independent young woman, and a pre-teen girl sorceress with immature powers). The manga Slayers has identical roots shown in Van Von Hunter; as Slayers, whose protagonists were the aloof Gourry Gabriev and the powerful sorceress Lina Inverse. Normally I would not mind a spin-off of these sorts, but considering the magnitude of this contest, I was expecting a little more… Schwerk and Kaulfersh have a clever manga, but it just doesnt seem to have enough originality to have new material created on a frequent basis.
Continuing on we are given, The Little Match Girl by Hans Tseng. The Little Match Girl was originally a play/story made by the legendary Hans Christian Anderson; but here from Tseng we are given a more compact, and more touching translation of the classic tale of a street peddler trying to sell matches for money needed for food and clothing. The Little match Girl is easily the most emotionally riveting manga f the select Rising Stars. And not just because its original story itself has been classic for decades, but its presentation is absolutely awe inspiring. If you love drama in your manga, then read this short adaptation by Hans Tseng, even if you read it while standing in the aisle of your local bookstore. I guarantee you will be moved by this superb query of ‘what is true happiness.’ The artwork is magnificent, yet simple and productive. The adoption by Tseng of the Anderson tale The Little Match Girl is storytelling brilliance; both with its gorgeous look and feel.
Trickster was an entry from Bridget E. Wilde, which involves the high-school girl Bianca in a tale with a very strong backbone in mythology and folktales (obviously the trickster folktale). With a variety of luscious shojo characters, the interpretation Wilde has of modern day persons born to make trouble, is beautifully done, with both a promising story and pretty artwork. The characters have real depth, and they seem to manifest perfectly, even in such a short story. Taking inspirational points form Rumiko Takashi (Ranma 1/2, Inu-Yasha), the Bridget Wilde manga Trickster is very fun and very enjoyable, and even a bit romantic…
Next in The Rising Stars of Manga volume 1, is Emmalyne*s Mansion by Michael Vega; the story of a young girl who loves to visit her grandparents enormous (and mysterious) mansion. First off, Vega works as a freelance illustrator, and it truly shows in this bit; with eager original black and white pictures, mostly round so as to appear soft to the eye. The girl Emmalyne is as cute as a button in both serious and comedic approaches as the story lends. Fans of CLAMP will probably enjoy this light-hearted frolic with fantasy in Emmalyne*s Mansion.
Another runner-up is Pest by Kyle Hoyt; a comedic short of a monster that follows a girl home from work one night. Pest may not be the most astounding manga it is visual presence or its story, but it still delivers. It has this strange realistic feel to it that some of the other entries do not, and the character designs from Hoyt are simple and delicate. This is a manga artist with tons of potential waiting for their moment. And I say this because Pest is not a rushed story whatsoever. Its plot genuinely takes its time, and allows its characters to constructively evaluate each situation. The art style may be a tad unusual for some, but it does not take away from the substance of the manga.
Here is the part of this review I have long been waiting for. The runner-up manga Sitting Ducks by Benjamin Sato in the Tokyopop compilation the Rising Stars of Manga, is no doubt my absolute favorite out of the ten published. [the image at the bottom of this Anime News Announcement is from Sitting Ducks] It isnt just another well done comic, but if you are an honest artist of any form (visual, performing, literary), or simply an honest manga fan and read Sitting Ducks and do not either laugh out loud and empathize with its characters; then something is seriously wrong with you... With that said, what is it about you ask? Well, simply put it is ...an entry about not being able to come up with an entry... (as said by Jake Forbes of Tokyopop). And although the idea sounds rather dull, the story of best friends Noelle and Zachary and their ambition to win a manga contest comes to life ever so beautifully. Ben Sato has fluid and energetic character designs that are so gentle; you wont mind the constant close-ups of an individuals face form time to time. Also, the humor in Sitting Ducks is genuine. The author arcs the story so that we the readers follow at the same pace as the protagonists; which is great because even though the story in general is rather borrowed it is presented in such a fresh fashion that its almost as if this seemingly cliche entry is completely original. From a ringing telephone to debates on what type of pizza is best, the characters created for Sitting Ducks show every emotion (sometimes anime inspired) under the sun, which makes for a truly enjoyable manga. This seemingly gimmick of a story is transformed into a tale of personal struggles for independence; thanks to Benjamin Sato and his cleverness, we can use Sitting Ducks as a personal reference for inspirational and determination for times when our own original ideas do not appear to be so original (or perhaps not original enough to be praised by the masses).
The entry Ophelia*s Assassination: Veritas; looks like it was taken directly from the feature Ah! Megamisama (Ah! My Goddess), with its angels beautifully drawn in each panel so delicately you could swear you can touch the page and feel their soft skin. However, as all of the angels are male, it can be unbelievably easy to mistake them for the opposite gender with their long hair, gorgeous eyes, fair complexion, and curious sashay, but that doesnt me personally, because well… the art is great, period. And the plot, the story line is actually only a portion as told by its creator Kelli Hoover, is only a small portion of a greater story arc. The story is about a group of angels (named the Inner Circle) whom are some of if not the most powerful group of angels in all of heaven. The angels are named, Jury, Axiom, Justice, Trial, and Penalty (guess what their abilities are?), and to add to this poetry… if you read the manga, watch for what develops when with the absence of Justice, and the corruption of Trial, Jury becomes an obsolete force, which is a great celestial premise for a novel if you ask me. Especially with one of the angels last phrase: I wont be judged by my own peers! Ophelia*s Assassination: Veritas on the unfortunate side, develops a little too quickly; almost literally leaving out some of the angels. If allowed more space its easy to see that the work of Kelli Hoover would have certainly blossomed tenfold.
Next is the mature and elemental Zero, by Tracy Cox. It is obvious why Tokyopop chose this as one of its winners, and that is because it has all of the key elements of a great comic, and continues to build upon them through the last frame. Cox does not sacrifice one element for another, but instead finds ways to strengthen various aspects of this story, one of a pop icon whose unnoticed fall from fame is put into perspective. I warn you though, Zero is not a comic for all ages, with a few bits of adult language and the continuous philosophizing of one persons tortured soul… this manga is serious in its very original approach to analyzing our society as a person, with everything to gain, and everything to lose. The design of Zero is very excellent and is done just as brutally honest as its plot allows.
The last runner-up is the manga short Proper Magic by John Lyons, the story of a young man who lives as a bartering tradesman on a post-apocalyptic world, within a space satellite. I know, it sounds odd, but that is the actual story. Lyons commented on Proper Magic, saying that it was a compacted version of an original idea formed years ago. This manga would be much better if spanned over more pages than the Tokyopop Rising Stars of Manga format allowed; because at times there appears to be just too much dialogue, which clutters the pages indefinitely. There are great character designs (very technical), but unfortunately we only perceive a glimpse of each due to the quick moving plot (a small problem with compacting) of male protagonist being called to save the world. Lyons Proper Magic would suit a novel format well, and still the attention to detail is worth some appraisal.
OK, time to recap; the Tokyopop Rising Stars of Manga contest was quite a success with Devil*s Candy the grand prize gothic comedy adventure, Van Von Hunter the although not entirely original funny story of swordsman and sorceress with style, The Little Match Girl the retelling of an honestly touching classic done with amazing talent, Trickster the folktale come to life in modern days with a well developed artwork, Emmalyne*s Mansion the all ages fantasy visually fascinating as well as with a well-structured dialogue, Pest the evidently monochrome comedy short about a girl and her (new) pet monster, Sitting Ducks while not groundbreaking as far as the storyline goes was done with an astounding amount of artistic intelligence, Ophelia*s Assassination: Veritas the creative story of angels in heaven, with earthly desires, Zero the very real and yet mournful tale of one mans personal emotional life journey, and Proper Magic, the somewhat futuristic story of a young man and his courage and/or luck done with great detail.
The first Tokyopop Rising Stars of Manga contest seems to have gone off without a hitch. From shojo manga, to gothic cuteness, from manga about indecisiveness to a story about understanding true happiness, and more, are all covered in this first volume. When the second volume gets released in December of 203, I know I will be all over it and then some, watching and waiting for more published amateur comics.
The Publisher and CEO of Tokyopop Stu Levy said that none of the ten selected winners are anywhere near perfection… but instead that they just have a really great start on a promising career. SO, if you thought not to enter the contest on the grounds that your work was supposedly imperfect in some way shape or form, its ok. But next time do what you can with innovation and creativity (and of course, some talent) to dot your Ts and cross your Is… err… no… wait, dot your Is and cross your Ts; and do not hesitate to enter the second Rising Stars of Manga contest from Tokyopop.

Most of you know I love the hardcore brutality of the Virtua Fighter games, and I was just wondering if the anime was any good. My local store is selling all their anime tapes at ten bucks a pop and they have the first two VF tapes, and I was wondering if they'd be worth the cash, considering money's tight and there's some PS1, GBA, DC and N64 stuff I'd like to get.
